SCBS sees the 3Q21 Thai stock market entering a growth phase, with the SET Index based on fundamentals targeting 1,600 points, advising investors to focus on passive and small cap stocks with unique fundamentals and reasonable valuation

SCB Securities Co., Ltd. (SCBS) sees the Thai stock market cycle transitioning from hope-driven to a growth phrase, relative more to earnings growth from fundamentals rather than a valuation hike.  The SET Index for 2022 based on fundamentals is targeted at 1,600 points. Investors are advised to shift investment strategies from cyclical stocks to passive stocks with unique fundamentals driving profits and reasonable valuation, relying less on macroeconomic momentum.  The proper entry points are in the range of 1,500 – 1,550 points. Recommended stocks include CRC, GPSC, PM, RJH, and SFT.

Speaking about the 2021 stock outlook, SCBS Managing Director and Head of Research Sukit Udomsirikul revealed that prospects for the overall macroeconomy are about to change, following a faster-than-expected global economic recovery led by the US and China.  It is projected that economic growth for the two major economies will slow down in 3Q21. Monetary and fiscal policies will be tightened, with measures such as a slowdown in liquidity injections and a tax hike employed by the US, among others.  These policies are the opposite of those implemented the previous year.  European countries are recovering well, with many economic activities picking up to near pre-COVID-19 levels, constituting a key contribution to global economic growth in 2021. However, the recovery of developing economies appears to remain sluggish due to low vaccination rates, placing control of the pandemic in peril, especially while encountering outbreaks of new strains.

Besides the new round of COVID-1, another important factor that must be closely monitored in 3Q21 is inflation, which recorded a sharp increase in 2Q21.  Most economists project that this trend will be temporary and will begin to slow down in the second half of 2021.  If inflation shows no signs of slowing down as expected, it will turn into a major risk factor pressuring the investment climate due to market concerns that the risk could prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates sooner.

On the local front, a third wave of COVID-19 had a significant impact on Thailand in 2Q21, after a second wave in late 2020. Economic stimulus measures have played a part in reducing impacts from strict control measures.  However, the most important factor critical for economic recovery lies in the achievement of the vaccination rates planned by the government.  Herd immunity would support the domestic economy and tourism in fully recovering in the fourth quarter.  The latest GDP growth forecast for 2021 is 2%.

In terms of Thai stock market outlook for Q3/21, the SET Index has seen a recovery to pre-COVID-19 levels, despite the crisis not yet being over, signaling that share prices reflect investors’ expectations.  From now on, the Thai stock market cycle is expected to adjust from a “hope phase” driven by valuation to a “growth phase” driven by fundamental growth, so investors should adopt a more cautious approach.  SCBS estimates that passive stocks will outperform the market, with higher earnings and lower volatility than cyclical stocks.  Based on such fundamentals, the SET index for 2022 is targeted at 1600 points, in line with our expectation that next year’s earnings will be able to resume their pre-COVID-19 levels. Our main strategy for outperforming the market in 2H21 is to diversify and choose stocks with strong fundamentals and reasonable valuations.  We believe that cyclical stocks should already reflect a strong recovery, and investors are also advised to look for passive buying opportunities with attractive valuations, with key entry points in the range of 1,500-1,550 points.

Top picks for 3Q21 include small cap and passive stocks with unique fundamentals driving profits and reasonable valuations.  These stocks will rely less on macroeconomic momentum to drive above-market yields. Featured stocks are CRC, GPSC, PM, RJH, and SFT.

  • CRC: SSS 2QTD is expected to grow 30%YoY from last year’s low base, picking up slightly in the second half of May from the normal base, following service resumption of its stores.  The company has passed the bottom line and is expected to enjoy the benefits of the government’s “Ying Chai Ying Dai” (the more you spend, the more you get) e-voucher cashback scheme, especially fashion and hardline businesses.
  • GPSC: QoQ 2Q21 earnings are expected to increase due to lower maintenance shutdowns, lower gas costs, and full-quarter operation of the GE Phase 5 power plant amid the current COVID-19 outbreak, which lowered demand from the industrial sector compared to the previous year.
  • PM: QoQ 2Q21 earnings are expected to decline seasonally, but YoY growth will remain as the company and partners plan to continuously launch new products, including the expansion of agents and distribution centers as well as online distribution channels.
  • RJH: 2Q21 profits could decline, while demonstrating outstanding YoY growth through recognition of higher revenues from COVID-19 testing and strong financial status, showing a net cash of 66 million baht.  Its share price still lags, currently trading at an advanced P/E ratio of 2021 and 2022 at 22.7 and 21, below the group average of 52.0 and 35.4, respectively.
  • SFT: 2Q-4Q21 is estimated to record new highs, continuously driven by growing demand in all customer segments and new production capacity starting from June.
